Words matter: Reclaiming and Resignifying “Know Your Place

As a people development professional with over 20 years of experience in mentoring, I’ve always believed that words matter. And when I began studying female leadership and the gender gap, I realized that my years of work, dedication, and expertise had led me to a clear purpose: connecting women to their transformative potential.

That’s why one day, while reading about Allyson Felix, the Olympic athlete who stood up for herself and launched her own brand of running shoes after facing a 70% pay cut for having a child, I had an epiphany. There was no better name for my program than “Know Your Place.” This powerful phrase has been used historically to limit opportunities for growth and advancement for women and marginalized groups. But by reclaiming and resignifying it, we can empower women to know their worth, value, and unique contributions to the world.

“Know Your Place” sends a message that it’s essential for women to recognize and challenge the barriers, biases, and expectations that have been imposed on them by society, culture, and even themselves. It’s about embracing their strengths, weaknesses, and complexities as women and using them to create a fulfilling and meaningful life on their own terms.

I invite you to embark on a journey of clarity, vision, connection, and impact with me. Let’s redefine what it means to “Know Your Place” and unlock your full potential as a woman. Together, we can create a world where women can thrive, lead, and inspire.
